Cape Spear is the easternmost point of land in North America. There are lighthouses and hiking paths and lots of tourists, and it's very pretty, but the most interesting thing there are the bunkers and gun emplacements left from the Second World War. There was a real fear early in the war that England might fall, and Newfoundland, then a British colony, would be the stepping stone Germany could use to invade North America. There was a fair amount of submarine activity offshore, and Newfoundland was a stepping stone for Canada and America to ship and fly to England, but these guns here were never fired in war. Oddly, the bunkers and guns remain, but the carriages for the guns were removed after the war.
