This straight is part of the Dover Fault, a boundary between the rocks which form the North American continent to the west (to the right) and rocks which form Europe and Africa to the east (to the left). When the Atlantic started spreading about 200 million years ago, it didn't quite keep to its previous boundaries (previously as the Iapetus Ocean between Laurentia (North America) and Gondwanaland (Europe)) and some European rock found its way to North America.
