John Cabot landed in Bonavista, Newfoundland in 1497. He was supossedly the first European to visit Newfoundland, but the Basques are suspected of fishing and whaling on the Grand Banks in the early 14th century, Leif Erikson founded a settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows around 1000AD, and there is a story of St. Brendan, an Irish monk who supossedly visited Iceland, Greenland, and other lands further off to the west. All of them found people already living here, though whether they were Inuit or Beothuck Indians isn't known. This is a reproduction of his ship, the Matthew, named for his wife, Mattea. Below is a plaque presented by the city of Venice where Cabot was born as Giovanni Caboto.
